Thank God for Hurricanes!

Here's a little evidence that economic incentives can move mountains in a hurry: Sales of the largest SUVs dropped by over half in September, compared to a year before. And sales of the Prius (Toyota's hybrid) is up by 90%. Makes you wonder why the tax code actually gives tax breaks for SUV purchases. And makes you wonder what would happen if it were the opposite. More hurricanes! More! Let's have just a couple of environmental pseudo-disasters to wake us up before the real ones start.

well, it's sort of comforting that once shit gets really bad, people will wake up and pay attention... But mostly it's depressing that despite our claim to some degree of intelligence as a species, we routinely choose to live for today without any thought of tomorrow, and even after years of scientists and environmentalists saying, "hey, this shit is really bad for you, and it's going to have deadly effects if we don't stop NOW", people still prefer to just find out for themselves. Reminds me of a kid who won't listen when his parents tell him, "don't tease the dog", and ultimately has to be bitten before he'll understand why he shouldn't have teased the dog.
