
Corinne at Mitla. This city was originally built by the Zapotecs, but was taken over by the Mixtecs prior to the arrival of the Spanish. It had a population of about 10,000 in 1350. The Spanish were in the habit of destroying the temples of the people they conquered, but in this case they recycled the original structure into their own church. What better way to lay waste to a people than to build your church on top of, and out of, the ruins of their civilization?
