This kind of building, called a panelak, fills the outskirts of many larger towns. The town centers are usually filled with old buildings with decorative plaster detailing, and the outskirts contain rows and rows of these panel‡ky (plurals in Czech usually have ys at the end, which gives you funny looking imported words such at "pizzy," "kredit karty," "mandarinky," and "enzymy"). We looked at an apartment in this kind of building, but it was small and sad and gray and depressing. Well, that and the landlady didn’t want to rent to foreigners. We chose instead the basement of a 50-something lady who showed us the house in a pink bikini. (How she got the house into a pink bikini I’ll never know.)
