
Wawel (VAH-vell) Castle in Krakow (KRAH-koof) was begun in the 900s, but remodeled in the 1500s. This shot is a good example of how architectural features can accumulate piecemeal over the centuries.
Just to the left of what you can see is the cathedral where Krakow native Karol Wojtiła was Archbishop before he became Pope John-Paul II. They obviously love him here. And hey, who doesn’t love the pope?
