This is an overview of the island we visited during our last couple of days. It's about an hour's ferry ride from Guadaloupe, and is populated mostly by descendents of the original 17th century French colonists. The population of salty old guys who'd spent their lives fishing and drinking beer on the beach was impressive. For some reason, it was disconcerting to me to hear white guys speaking creole, but that's the real language of the island. French is sort of elitist (but we already knew that) and only for use with tourists and in school. The photo was taken from Fort Napoleon, now a naval history museum and home to many large iguanas.
