Tikal is an ancient Mayan city that throve between 400 B.C. and about 900 A.D. It was still up and running when the Spaniards arrived. The people who lived in the city of Tikal (which at its height had more than 30,000 residents) were converted to one of those pagan/Catholic hybrid religions before they were finally just wiped out. Tikal is an eight-hour bus ride along treacherous mountain roads, some paved, some not, from almost everything else in the country. We spent one full day getting up there, and one full day getting back down. Still, well worth it.
