Paul and Corinne's Southwest Adventure

Antelope Canyon, AZ

  May 2007

Antelope Canyon (1). The next few photos were taken in Lower Antelope Canyon, a small slot canyon not far from Page, AZ.

It is interesting to note how many places around Page are named Antelope This or Antelope That. We asked a couple of locals
about this. They said that there are no antelope in the area any more. Perhaps this is related to the existence of the dam.

A small plaque at the entrance commemorates the deaths of 10 tourists in 1997. Most were French, though there
were an American and a Swede, if I remember right. Apparently, they were in the canyon when it started to rain.
The Navajo guide led everyone out of the canyon while he went to check to see if there was a flash flood coming
from up the canyon. While he was gone, a private guide from the local tourist agency reassured everyone that it
was fine and led them back in. Soon thereafter, many tens of thousands of gallons of water came rushing through
and drowned everyone except the two or three skeptical souls who had remained above. The guide who led us down
said that they come back once a year on the anniversary of the event.
