Glen Canyon Dam.
I have never seen so many pickup trucks as I have around Lake Powell. Everyone in Arizona apparently
owns an F-250 or larger, or else Chevy's equivalent. Some of them tow huge boats, so I can sort of grant them the need for
the power and hauling capacity. Others I think just have that mindset that reminds us how southern Arizona (and southern New
Mexico, for that matter) are ideological extensions of Texas at heart. That helps to explain the extended cabs, dualies, and
bumper stickers commemorating America, guns, and any combination of the two.
So the lake was fun (though icy icy cold in May), but the whole time I kept thinking about the destruction wrought by
this dam. Apparently even Barry Goldwater came to regret building this monstrosity. Rather than describe exactly why,
I suggest you read "The Monkey Wrench Gang" instead.
